Learning about all the benefits related to caring for someone with disabilities can be quite challenging. So here is some help that may be helpful for Medicaid clients and those with a disability needing some additional support.

Car Tax Relief
For vehicles that have been modified for access, some counties off a tax relief. Here is a link to the Henrico application form for reduced tax rate for physically handicapped individuals. For Chesterfield, please call the tax office to arrange a time for vehicle visual inspection.
Many individuals with intellectual disabilities are eligible for waiver programs that provide financial support for care and access to living supports
Just like College 529, ABLE account is a tool to allow tax free growth for funds to support an individual with disabilities especially for the future. Be sure to learn more about this and how it can be integrated into the long term support plan.
The Virginia Livable Home Tax Credit (LHTC) program is designed to improve accessibility and universal visitability in Virginia’s residential units by providing state tax credits for the purchase of new units or the retrofitting of existing housing units. Tax Credits are available for up to $6,500 for the purchase/construction of a new accessible residence and up to 50 percent of the cost of retrofitting existing units, Not to exceed $6,500.

Transportation Reimbursements
Most Medicaid Insurance Programs provide Mileage Reimbursement for transportation to medical appointments, day programs and a quarterly grocery run. The compensation is approximately $0.55/mi. So for weekly appointments, it is possible to receive $60-100/month.
Henrico Real Estate Tax Exemption
The Real Estate Advantage Program (REAP) is a tax exemption for qualified seniors, residents that are 100 percent permanently and totally disabled, and their spouses which relieves real estate tax up to a maximum of $3,200. Chesterfield County also has a similar program.
For care providers, there are programs available to provide respite. This reimbursement program provide support up to $500 a year.
For those on the DD waiver waitlist, IFSP funding is available to support attendant care.

For live in care providers, the IRS provides an exemption. Check out Difficulty of care tax exemption. IRS notice 2014-17 exempts payments from VA state & Federal taxes. Family members are also exempt from FICA, SUTA & FUTA.
